What is a Serious Game? How Do Organizations Learn Through Games?

What is a Serious Game (Ciddi Oyun)?

Serious game — in Turkish, ciddi oyun — is the name given to games whose primary purpose is not solely to entertain; but to teach, impart skills, or change behavior. From the outside, you see an enjoyable game: points, roles, crises, competition, or collaboration. Inside, a carefully designed learning experience operates: decision-making, resource management, communication, leadership.

Although the term seems new, the idea is old. Pilots have been trained in flight simulators for decades, medical schools use surgical simulations, and armies conduct exercises with strategy games. What has changed is technology: today, there's no need for a simulator cabin for a serious game — a browser and a phone are enough. This has brought game-based learning to the center of corporate training.

Are Serious Games and Gamification (Oyunlaştırma) the Same Thing?

They are often confused, but they are different:

  • Gamification (Oyunlaştırma): Is adding game elements (points, badges, leaderboards) to a non-game process. Example: giving a badge to someone who completes a module on a training platform.
  • Serious game: Is designing a real game from start to finish; the learning objective is embedded in the game's narrative. Example: a strategy game where a team collectively manages a Mars colony for 90
